Remote Dog Training Collars

Training a dog to behave and follow commands isn't always easy. Some dogs just have a hard time learning how to listen to their owners, no matter how hard the owners try. So, a lot of owners decide to try remote dog training collars to help them to get their dogs to step in line.

There are actually a few different types of remote dog training collars from which a dog owner can choose. The type an owner selects depends upon what the owner feels may work best. A consultation with a veterinarian can help an owner decide, as can chatting with an expert at a pet supply store. But, whichever type an owner chooses, all remote dog training collars work in the same manner.

Here is how these collars work: The remote dog training collar comes in two parts—the collar and the remote. The collar is placed around the dog's neck and the remote stays with the dog owner. When the dog misbehaves, the owner presses a button on the remote to activate the collar.

When the button is pushed, what happens with the collar depends upon what type of remote dog training collar was purchased. If an electronic collar was chosen, a small shock is given to the dog, similar to a light static shock. Or, if the owner opted for an auditory training collar, the dog will hear a warning tone. Other types of remote dog training collars may give a vibration or spray a citronella solution to get the dog's attention.

There are two ways in which dog owners can use these collars—to prevent bad behavior and to correct bad behavior. For example, if a dog always knocks over the trash cans outside when he is on a walk, the dog owner can work to prevent this behavior by pressing the remote button whenever the dog approaches the trash cans. Soon enough, the dog will learn that something unpleasant is associated with the trash cans, so he will begin to avoid them. To work to correct the bad behavior, the dog owner can also press the remote button whenever the dog has already knocked over the trash cans. This will reinforce the idea that this behavior is unacceptable.

Remote dog training collars can be used with any dog breed and any size of dog; however, dog owners do need to take care to match the size of the dog with the strength of the training collar. It is recommended that dog owners use the lowest effective strength of correction with any remote dog training collar; therefore, dog size is a very important factor when selecting a collar. Smaller dogs need less powerful collars than larger dogs. It may be wise to consult with a veterinarian or dog expert at a pet store for advice on choosing the best remote dog training collar.

These collars can be found in any pet supply store, online or offline. Prices vary from about $40 to $200 or more, depending upon the type and style of collar chosen.
