Small Dog Training Collars
Many dog owners prefer small dogs for a wide variety of reasons. Some like to have the ability to lift their dog if necessary—something which is rather difficult for dog owners of very large breeds of dogs. Other dog owners like small breeds because they enjoy allowing their dogs to sit on their laps. And, a lot of dog owners opt for smaller dogs because they feel that these breeds are going to be easier to train and handle.
But, this isn’t really the case—dog owners cannot predict the ease with which they will train their dogs based simply upon the size and breed of the dog. So, because of this misconception, many dog owners end up with small dogs that misbehave.
These dog owners may want to try electronic dog training collars; however, some standard collars may be too large or powerful for little dogs. Fortunately, there are small dog training collars available. These collars work just as other electronic dog training collars, but they are sized for much smaller dogs.
When choosing an electronic dog training collar, experts say that the most important factor is selecting one that is the correct size and strength for the dog. For this reason, owners of small dogs—especially owners of toy breeds—used to have difficulty in finding electronic collars. Nowadays, though, there are collars available to fit all sizes of dogs, even toy breeds and miniature breeds with neck circumferences as small as three inches.
The small dog training collars are a somewhat recent addition to the marketplace. Before they were developed, owners of miniature breeds and toy breeds had no options as far as electronic shock collars. Using collars made for larger dogs was not a viable option because the power of the shocks given would have been far too great for the tiny dogs to handle. It is recommended that the lowest effective shock be used with any dog; therefore, using even the lowest setting on a collar intended for a medium-sized dog would have been far too strong for a very small dog.
Because of their relative newness, small dog training collars may not be as widely available as other electronic dog training collars. Owners of toy or miniature breeds may need to search a few brick-and-mortar stores before finding them. Or, they can save some time by just purchasing the small dog training collars online—several online merchants sell electronic collars in this size.
This type of electronic dog training collar is a little more expensive than other shock collars. This may be due to the fact that the collar unit had to be manufactured differently so as to be made small enough to work for the very small dogs. Also, some of these collars include both the shock setting and an auditory setting, meaning that owners can choose to alert their dogs to good and bad behavior via sound rather than shocks. A small dog training collar generally costs around $100, though they may be found for less or more, depending upon where they are purchased.
